DPCF NEWS

IMPORTANT  HEALTH  INFORMATION May 25th 2017

FYI IMPORTANT UPDATE ON VIRUS!! PLEASE READ...

Canine influenza contracted at Perry and Deland shows...update from Univ. of FL: the definitive diagnosis on the patients there is Canine Influenza H3N2 (the one that sprung up in Chicago a couple of years ago), NOT H1N1 (one of the tests that was used only tested for H1N1 and showed positive but further investigation, more sensitive testing showed H3N2).

The incubation period is 2-5 days from exposure to onset of clinical signs.
Clinical signs mimic kennel cough but this virus progresses to serious pneumonia
in some patients.

Dogs are infectious for 3 weeks. If your dog was coughing, even if not seriously ill,
do not go to shows/trials for three weeks after clinical signs resolve.
The Merck vaccine does offer cross-protection for both H3N2 and H3N8
the Zoetis vaccine does not.

Please PLEASE share with our dog community!
This report came from an exhibitor with a critically ill dog currently under critical care at the University of Florida.

If you use a professional handler, make sure precautions are being taken.
Owner handlers likewise be vigilant. Dogs exposed to this virus may be carriers and yet not develop symptoms.
Titles, group placements, or rankings are *not* worth the risk of losing a dog.**
